About
India, the world’s second-largest country by population, has the highest number of people (732 million) without access to toilets. The report by WaterAid, titled Out of Order: The State of the World’s Toilets 2017, further stated that 355 million women and girls lack access to a toilet. If they were to stand in a line, the queue could circle the Earth more than four times. Each year, 60,700 children under five years die from diarrheal diseases, the WaterAid report said. Indian states with poor access to sanitation report high incidence of diarrheal diseases.
Apart from poor health, lack of toilets means that more than 1.1 billion women and girls globally get limited education and face harassment. In rural India, high dropout rates and non-enrolment among girls can be attributed to absence of toilet facilities. In rural India, 23% of girls have listed menstruation as the chief reason for dropping out of school. As many as 28% of them said they do not go to school during their period because they lack clean and affordable protection.
The project is undertaken so that we could address the following problems:
- Health
- Safety
- Hygienic Environment
- Open defecation
- Ground water contamination
Project Goals and Strategy. Provide background of the organization/community and the primary needs of the organization/community.The school is situated in Thorapadi, Vellore which is certainly in the outskirts of Vellore. The total strength of the school is 1289 out of which 499 are girls. There are about 34 women teaching and non-teaching staffs. There are 14(10 urinals+ 4 toilets) built toilets for girls without proper drainage system. The sewage flows out in the open are creating pollution and disease-causing agents. The human waste discharged in the ground affects the students and makes the surroundings stinky. Thus, the school needs a new drainage system to be built for the seamless use of the lavatories.
